Last 3 months, I’ve started my writing journey on Medium and Each day try to do better than yesterday. I always like to share my knowledge and experiences with others. Because I believe that information increases as it is shared.
In this article, I’m going to share with you what I collected about writing better as a guideline.
1.Choose a topic that is so important to you that it is something that comes to your mind when you are left to yourself, that you talk about when talking to your friends, that you believe in and that you care about a lot.
2.When choosing the subject for your first book, 70% should be what you want to write. The other 30% is what subject people want to read about. You should also consider this. The first book is more of a personal matter than a commercial one. You will become a writer in the eyes of the people around you. When people read this book, they will have looked into your inner world. Because of this personal nature of the job, I say 70–30%, not 50–50%.
3.When choosing a topic, circle the “What do I know well or what do I care about?” Do a brainstorm to write down all the answers you can give to the questions. On the other hand, “What do people want to read?” Repeat for the question. Your goal is to find the intersection areas of these two sets. So you have to find an area where you are both full and people want to read.
4.Decide what type you will write. Poetry, novel? The shortest answer to this is what kind of works you enjoy reading or watching (documentary/drama/science fiction etc.).
5.Buy and read books by the most influential authors in the genre and language you want to write in. Focus first on how you feel as a reader. If you write a good book, you can make your reader feel these feelings. Focus on that as you write. Second, focus on format and shape. That is, look at sentence structures, how many words are in a sentence, low sentence usage, how adjectives, nouns are used, how logical arguments are arranged or how characters are introduced, how descriptions are made. Take these for example.
6.The most beautiful things start with Ancient Greek Philosophy. Learn from through Plato, and especially Socrates. If you are going to write a novel, work on the dramatic structure. Aristotle is particularly valuable in this regard.
7.After that, you need to start writing to progress. Set yourself a daily word count target to maintain writing discipline. For example, aim to write 500 words a day, no matter how hard it is or how bad your writing is.
8.It is more difficult to write large text, starting with small text. Focus on a specific topic at the very beginning, such as “How Artificial Intelligence Is Changing Our Lives” and consume every resource you can find on the subject. Then write articles with 1500 words focusing on a topic, with an introduction and conclusion. If you want to advance in the field of novels, write short stories.
9.One-third of the process of creating a book is writing it, and the remaining two-thirds is editing it, rereading it, adding and removing it. So read your own writing, make your additions and subtractions better. Do not publish these short articles without at least two edits.
10.Get feedback. It is valuable if what you write is read. So first of all, get support from your environment. Have your articles been read by those you know and those you don’t know? No matter how negative or harsh the feedback you get, don’t be upset about it. In fact, stay away from people who just say “it’s great” and don’t give constructive feedback. Consider every feedback, but don’t accept it all! Everyone has a different opinion and one person may love what you write and another may hate it.
11.Find a way to get people you don’t know read your posts. The best way to do this today is to create a blog. We’re lucky because Medium.com is the best platform to do this. Or, many blogs are looking for content creators, where you can work as a freelance content creator. This will give you the discipline to produce text within a specific calendar. For example, I focus to share 5 articles in a week.
12.When writing your articles, remember that there is a person in front of you. Visualize someone in front of you and write as if you are describing it to your ideal audience reader.
13.Writing that is completely error-free and fully compliant with the spelling rules is an indicator of quality. Do not compromise on these principles. Aim for error-free writing in each of your posts. (Even if you think that the article is correct when you write it, you will find new errors in each re-reading. So read it again and again. For example, I’ve read this article 3 times but I’m sure that there are still lots of grammar or writing mistakes.)
14.Writing is energy work, but this energy is different from physical energy. For example, I noticed that when I started writing more than 1000 words a day, my writing quality decreased. That’s why I don’t go over this limit. Also, the morning hours after I wake up are when I can focus on my clearest thoughts. Discover for yourself the times when you can best concentrate and use your productive energy and plan accordingly.
15.In summary, the only way to learn to write is to write and read more. The only way to make discipline a habit is to promise yourself that you will never give up on the goals you set for yourself. Set yourself a goal. Make this goal a realistic and very modest one.
16.First, Swallow bite, then target it. If you start with humble goals, your confidence in your self-discipline and work ethic will also increase.
